More Than A Cleaner Home: Feng Shui Consultations
By xdavid

If you've been wishing that you could change the interior of your home, you may be considering feng shui consultations as an option for helping instigate a shift. Feng shui is an ancient Chinese art that has a much broader application than most people realize. In the traditional sense, feng shui would be used for determining the placement of a home, not just for arranging the furnishings within. Of course, feng shui was also used for burial sites, so there are plenty of ways in which adapting feng shui for a more modern age is necessary as most of us are less concerned with our burial sites as we are with the way our home feels. The "feel" of your home isn't about the look and style of it, rather, the feel of your home is about the way that you and others actually experience your home. Is the entryway welcoming? Is the kitchen warm and inviting? Do you feel focused when you work in your home office? Is it easy to relax in your bedroom? All of things things are taken into consideration in discussing the "feel" of your home, as they are important parts of the energy flow in your home.

Some aspects of feng shui are simple- such as placing mirrors above the sink in your bathroom to prevent an energy drain from occurring, or placing your bed on a north-south axis in such a way that it is not in the line of a doorway and has clear space on either side. Others involve a little more work on your part- such as clearing out the clutter in your home. Often, people hold onto items that they do not need or really even want. This applies to physical items as well as emotionally and psychologically. Clearing out these unnecessary items in your home can act as a kind of catharsis to help get rid of unwanted clutter in your life.

Ultimately, there is a lot more of that kind of cross-over than many of us would like to admit. Take, for example, your cleaning habits. Do you wait until your house is a total wreck, do you clean on a schedule, or do you pick up after yourself and clean as you go? Now, think about how you deal with psychological or emotional things. Do you hold things inside until you can't take it anymore, do you have a scheduled practice where you deal with what's going on in your life, or do you tend to process things as you go? Your home and the way you care for it, as well as what you put into it, are indicative of how you care for yourself. While that statement might be a little "deep" or intimidating for some, it is really quite simple. You can practice your self-care by taking care of your home. That's not to say you should run out and get your feng shui certification, just a reminder to be mindful in your daily life.
